Steve Gooding
RAC Foundation

Steve Gooding became Director of the RAC Foundation in May 2015 after a civil service career encompassing many transport-related roles.  

After graduating from Durham University Steve joined the civil service in 1983, moving to the Department of Transport in 1987 where, amongst other roles, he was private secretary to transport ministers Peter Bottomley, Michael Portillo and Roger Freeman.

Steve’s civil service career culminated in six years as a Director General on the Department for Transport’s main board from 2009 to 2015, latterly running the Roads, Traffic & Local Group, where his responsibilities included: developing the Roads Investment Strategy and the Transport Strategy for the North; administering funding for local government; evolving policy on road safety; and running the motoring services agencies. 

Steve is a Vice President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation, and a trustee of the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund.
